Case Study: Backdating with a Twist

We recently acquired this beauty with one goal in mind – a full backdate with some quirky, custom touches. It’s not just a restoration; it's a complete transformation. The plan? Upgrade the brakes and suspension, strip it down to the bones, and give it that classic pre-73 look with a few surprises thrown in.

Stripping It Down – A Fresh Start

First things first, we got to work on a complete strip-down. The engine came out, the interior was gutted, and we began the process of turning this car into something special. The front and rear panels were removed to backdate the exterior to the elegant lines of a pre-73 model. At the rear, we carefully removed the impact bumper mountings and welded in captive nuts to accommodate the new, retro-style bumpers.

Onto the Spit – Reinventing the Underbody

With the car on a spit, we turned it upside down to strip away the old underseal. It’s a messy job, but essential for proper restoration. Once the underside was prepped, we applied a fresh stone chip coating and painted it to match the body colour, giving the car a fresh, factory-finished look underneath.

Prepping for Paint – Details Matter

Next, we drilled new holes in the engine lid to fit the retro-style badges. From there, it was off to the spray booth for a fresh coat of paint. Every detail was meticulously prepped to ensure a flawless finish – no half-measures here.

Reassembly – Bringing It to Life

With the paintwork complete, it was time for the fun part: reassembly. We fitted all the new parts and got the car ready for its new interior. Inside, we went for a complete re-trim in high-quality leather, with a few quirky upgrades to keep things interesting. It’s these little touches that make each restoration unique.

Engine Detailing & Finishing Touches

The engine was meticulously detailed and prepped to go back in. Once installed, we added the finishing touches – a brand-new transfer decal, freshened up badges, and custom wheels. These wheels were stripped, powder-coated black, diamond-cut, and then sealed with a clear lacquer, giving them a stunning finish that sets off the car’s new look.
